Tour Overview
This 5-day seasonal safari focuses on the spectacular wildebeest calving season in the Ndutu region, which takes place between December and April. During this period, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains host hundreds of thousands of wildebeest as they gather to give birth, creating one of Africa’s most dramatic wildlife events.
The high concentration of newborn calves naturally attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards, making this one of the best times of year to witness intense wildlife interaction. Accommodation includes one night at Eileen’s Trees Inn in Karatu and three nights at Sero Tented Camp in Ndutu, strategically positioned within the migration zone.

Day 1: Arusha – Ngorongoro Highlands (Karatu)
After breakfast in Arusha, depart toward the Ngorongoro highlands. The scenic drive passes through local villages and agricultural landscapes before ascending into cooler highland terrain. Upon arrival in Karatu, check in at Eileen’s Trees Inn, set in lush gardens near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax and prepare for the days ahead. Dinner and overnight at Eileen’s Trees Inn. -
Day 2: Karatu – Ndutu (Southern Serengeti Ecosystem)
After breakfast, drive toward the Ndutu region, located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and bordering the southern plains of Serengeti National Park. Upon arrival, begin your first game drive in the Ndutu plains. Between December and April, vast herds of wildebeest and zebra gather here to calve. Thousands of calves are born daily during peak season, creating extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities. Predators closely follow the herds, and you may witness lion prides, cheetahs, hyenas, and other carnivores taking advantage of the seasonal abundance. Dinner and overnight at Sero Tented Camp in Ndutu. -
Day 3: Full-Day Ndutu Calving Experience
Today is dedicated to exploring the Ndutu plains. The open grasslands provide excellent visibility, making it easier to observe predator-prey interactions. Your guide will track herd movements and predator activity to position you in the most active areas. The calving season is characterized by dramatic wildlife encounters, playful newborn calves, and high predator concentration. A picnic lunch will be served in the bush to maximize time in the field. Return to Sero Tented Camp for dinner and overnight. -
Day 4: Full-Day Ndutu Game Drive
Another full day of game drives allows for deeper exploration of the Ndutu region. Besides the migration herds, the area supports resident wildlife including giraffes, elephants, jackals, and diverse birdlife. Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek attract flamingos and other water birds, adding scenic diversity to your safari experience. Dinner and overnight at Sero Tented Camp. -
Day 5: Ndutu – Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha
After an early breakfast, depart Ndutu and proceed toward the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. Descend approximately 600 meters into the crater for a half-day game drive. The crater floor hosts one of Africa’s densest wildlife populations and offers strong chances to spot the Big Five, including the endangered black rhino. After a picnic lunch near a hippo pool, ascend the crater walls and return to Arusha in the late afternoon, marking the end of your 5-day Ndutu calving safari experience.
